Styling X Design
In the fashion business, there are two elements that affect the creativity – craft and art. In order to release the art or that which affects the sense of beauty, it is critical to have mastered the craft, the skill in using the tools that create the art. In fashion this involves drawing, pattern making, and garment construction techniques. Depending on size of the Company, the art and craft may be expressed through the positions of stylist and designer.
Styling involves creating concepts and theme direction for each line. This usually takes the form of story boards. They contain photos, magazine clippings, 3-D elements, or sketches depicting the theme concept along with the color pallets, fabric swatches, and stylized silhouette sketches. The story boards establish the mood and styling direction from the standpoint of the artistic elements that will drive the line. Music, art, cinema, TV, sports, and world events may inspire trend direction.
Designers interpret the concepts communicated by the stylists into actual garment. This involves many of the craft aspects that affect the product development, such as pattern design and grading, garment construction techniques, and the interplay of fabric, findings and trims. A skilled designer creates prototypes for silhouettes presented on the story boards for a specific line.
